positive or negative coupling constant in NMR

When positive and negative coupling constants ocurr in NMR? and why? What are the spin state of the nucleis and the bond electrons for each situation? An alpha proton coupled to other proton decrease or increase its frequency of ressoance for a 1J, 2J and 3J?

Thank you so much
